Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden: Hero or Traitor?

On August 3rd I will be presenting Rulers of the Nativity, the sixth part of an ongoing series on Traditional Hellenistic astrology being held in Portland Oregon. Earlier that morning, I also will be giving a live webinar on The First House: Life and Spirit, discussing the ancient and modern meanings of the first house and how to interpret planets located in the house as well as the ruler. This is the first of a series of 12 webinars I will present. Every month, there will be another webinar on each of the other houses.

I have been captivated by the story of Edward Snowden and his chart. The debate rages as to whether he is a heroic whistle-blower or a despicable traitor. At my upcoming Portland workshop Rulers of the Nativity, we will examine Snowden’s chart from a Hellenistic perspective and see how it compares to that of President Obama. We’ll discover which planets are in charge of their lives as a whole and how they might be expected to stand off against one another. For those who can't attend, we'll offer the audio here for download this fall.

Demetra George How to Use an Ephemeris

New Release: Using the Ephemeris to Track Transits

Our computer programs handle most of our astrological calculations these days, but there are still times when it may be practical to consult the old trusty ephemeris when tracking transits or looking for planetary stations. If your first look at those number-littered pages leaves you feeling a bit overwhelmed, have no fear. Demetra demystifies the process using her skillful and patient expert teaching skills in this new program called Using the Ephemeris to Track Transits.

In a step-by-step process using a real birth chart as an example, Demetra walks us through how to read the ephemeris, and how to use it to track planetary transits to a natal birth chart.

This program will teach you:

  • How to identify retrograde cycles
  • How to read lunation cycles
  • Where to find eclipse dates and why you need them
  • Why planetary speed is important
  • How to identify a planetary station
  • How to track transiting planets to with a natal chart
  • How to identify major themes for the year ahead

In addition to learning how to read those information-rich ephemeris tables, you'll leave with the foundations for doing a full transit reading using all of the major inner and outer planets.

Recorded in 2013. mp3 format. 1 hr. 28 min. Includes pdf handouts.

Musings on Eclipses and Recent Travels

April and May have hosted an active eclipse season with two lunar and one solar eclipses. I have been gathering with a few local astrology friends at my home in Eugene, OR to read aloud from The Predictive Power of Eclipse Paths by Bill Meridian. Our intention is to gain a deeper understanding of how the energies are intensified and accelerated in the weeks before and after these periods when the potentiality arises for supra-ordinary possibilities.

During an eclipse, the emanations from the either the Sun or Moon are temporarily obscured by the other body. So I've been thinking about how eclipses contribute to disturbances in the composition of the atmosphere and ionosphere for a certain length of time, which in turn sensitizes the areas under the path (or visibility) of the eclipse. And this then sensitizes the individuals whose natal charts are connected to the triggering points of the eclipse.

At the beginning of April, I had the opportunity to revisit the Mysteries of the Dark Moon teachings during a 5-day retreat in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. While I continue to incorporate the lunation phases and dark goddess asteroids into my ongoing client work, it has been many years since I’ve presented this particular material in a focused and extended manner. We were all stunned with the depth and pathos of insights that arose, along with clarifications and healing of the parts of our lives that, as women, we normally keep hidden. In retrospect, I see how the eclipses prefigured the revelations of the dark moon goddess. Thank you to Evelyn Roberts for hosting this event in an exquisite nurturing setting. And gratitude to everyone there who was willing to ‘drink of the waters of Persephone, the secret well beside the sacred tree’ (Dion Fortune).

Obama Health Care

Obama and the Asteroid Healers

Those amazing asteroids have returned to the forefront of my thinking this past month as I’ve been preparing new asteroid lectures for WSAA, NY-NCGR, and the Mysteries of the Dark Feminine Moon retreat in Mexico. I revisited Obama’s chart and focused on the prominence of the family of mythic asteroid healers. Obama has the asteroid Koronis, the mother of the great healing god Asclepius, exactly conjunct his 18 Aquarius Ascendant to the degree. I immediately thought of his signature health care legislation and the motif of the white crow turned black, and this sparked me onto an asteroid hunt of other mythically related celestial bodies in his chart.

When certain asteroids are clustered around the power points of the chart (Sun, Moon, Ascendant ruler, four angles) or in close aspect to one another and the deities that they represent are likewise related in myth, these mythic motifs become emphasized and are often the major archetypal themes of the life. First the story, and then the chart. The mythic names that are asteroids are italicized.

Chiron, the wise kindly centaur who embodies the ‘wounded healer’ archetype is rejected and abandoned at birth – his primal core wound. He is then found and fostered by the siblings Apollo and Artemis. Chiron assumes his home in cave on Mt Pelion, becomes a foster parent himself, mentors many Greek heroes, and is famed for his knowledge of hunting and the use of medicinal herbs, surgery, and the laying on of hands.

The Dark Moon

Mexico: Time Lords & the MoonTideMuse

Soon March will rush in like a lion with its promise of springtime renewal, and my mind turns towards the forthcoming April retreat in the highlands of central Mexico. We will celebrate the Lunar Mysteries which I explored in depth while writing Mysteries of the Dark Moon in the late 1980’s. The tides on the Oregon Coast set the rhythms of my daily life during that period where, by day, I could look at the ocean from my windows and by night, bathe in the moonlight, as the sounds of the ocean rose and fell in accordance with the phases of the moon shining upon my sleeping body.

Evelyn Roberts of Heaven and Earth Workshops has invited me to reawaken that lunar muse and share the maturation of these teachings in a sacred space in Mexico next month. In turn I invite those of you who hear the murmurs of the MoonTideMuse to join us for a very personal immersion into the deep spaces of soul work inspired by our astrological chart.

Hellenistic and Vedic astrological systems contain time lord procedures that divide the whole of the life into discrete chapters of varying lengths of years, each under the governance of a succession of planetary time lords that depict the ebb and flow of our lives.  For modern astrologers, it is the progressed lunation cycle (reintroduced by Dane Rudhyar in 1936) that serves that function. The Moon Goddess’s celestial dance with the Sun God taps out the rhythm of successive 30-year cycles of our lives consisting of eight- 3 ½  year periods, which chart the beginning, culmination, completion, and renewal of our evolving life purpose.

Hermes Guardian of Thresholds

Hermes: Guardian of Thresholds

I was recently asked if I had a favorite planet, asteroid or aspect; and I had to confess to a crush on Mercury who may in fact be the most mysterious planet in the solar system. My Venus is in Virgo, the domicile of Mercury and the asteroid Hermes is conjunct Venus in my chart, so this attraction is indeed ‘written in the stars.’

Our first thoughts of Mercury, known as Hermes to the Greeks, are often as the bright and quicksilver fleet-footed youthful messenger of the Greco-Roman pantheon who is often reduced to the operation of our rational intellect in astrological symbolism. Yet, Hermes was also psychopomp, guide of souls in the dark shady Underworld and venerated as Trismegistus (three times great) in Hellenistic Egypt where he was credited as the fountainhead of the Hermetic arts of astrology, alchemy and magic. I explore the myth and astrology of this enigmatic planetary god in my recording of Hermes – Guardian of Thresholds, our featured Audio Program this month.

Saturnalia

Festival of Saturnalia

Winter Solstice, Saturnalia, and the Loosening of the Bonds

In the season between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we give thanks for all we have and then share that bounty with others. We can discover the origins of some of our holiday customs in the Saturnalia, an ancient Roman celebration of this season, which is also the source of the name of a Hellenistic astrological timing procedure called the ‘loosening of the bonds.’

Saturn is connected to the Greek god Kronos whose name is similar to the word for time. This God of Time was defeated in a battle for supremacy by his son Zeus, symbolizing how the old must give way to the new. He was then chained and imprisoned in the underworld Tartarus. Subsequently Saturn’s cult spread to Rome where he became the patron deity of agriculture and along with his wife Ops, which means bounty, presided over a golden age of happiness and plenty harvested from the fruits of the earth.

Church of St Teresa of Avila Spain

Church of St. Teresa of Avila

Here in the northern hemisphere we are now moving toward the dark days of winter that invite us to draw into the deep quiet within. I recently returned from a trip to Spain, where I had the opportunity to research the life of the mystic Saint Teresa in her home town of Avila. I will be presenting this research in a new talk entitled The Sacred Marriage: Vesta, Juno and Psyche on November 2-4 at the Evolutionary Astrology Conference in Portland Oregon.

There was a powerful response to the Dark Goddess asteroid readings I offered this summer, profound and moving for many people. To go deeper into how the mysteries of the lunar cycle – her dark phases and archetypes – help to place your entire life in context, I invite you to join me in the highlands of Mexico for a Dark Moon Goddess Retreat April 6-10, 2013.

Saturn in Scorpio: Transits and Time Lords

Father Time Saturn in ScorpioTurning our thoughts to the recent ingress of Saturn into Scorpio, I’d like to share some insights from both a modern and ancient perspective and discuss why at certain times the same transit can be more powerful than at other times.

On October 5th Saturn entered into Scorpio and will remain there until December 2014. Many astrologers are anxiously examining their charts to determine which planets and houses will be activated by Saturn’s “no more free lunches” dictum. From a modern interpretive approach, Saturn as the voice of pragmatism, accompanied by hard work and self-discipline, challenges us to face the reality of a situation even if it is dour. We are asked to step up to the plate, take on the responsibility of doing what needs to be done, and stabilize our structural foundation. Through this process we grow beyond our limitations and develop competence in the face of fear and inadequacy.

August 2012 News

We’ve now arrived at the halfway point between Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox. While we are still in the midst of summer, our thoughts are beginning to stretch ahead into what the fall season has in wait for us.

And speaking of the fall season, mark the weekend of November 2-4, 2012 for the Jeffrey Wolf Green Evolutionary Astrology Conference, where I will present again this year. The conference was very successful last year, and will take place again at the Still Mountain Conference and Retreat Center near Portland, Oregon. The early registration price is available until August 15th. I’ll present an asteroid lecture on The Sacred Marriage: Vesta, Juno, and Psyche. This talk will be a modern update of material I presented a few UAC's back, in a talk titled Venus, Vest and Juno.

The Guide on the Journey

Mackenzie RiverYesterday, as part of my post-birthday celebration, I went on a rafting trip along the scenic and wild rapids of the nearby McKenzie River. While on that adventure, I was inspired as to how to write this newsletter. It is all about the guide on the journey. This was my first river rafting experience of this level, and I was happy indeed to hear that our seasoned guide has been navigating these waters for 35 years.

Let’s take a look at which planetary archetype is guiding the journey for our two presidential candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Summer Solstice Greetings

Summer Solstice Stonehenge Here in the Northern hemisphere, the Sun has reached its maximum ascent, and with the longest hours of daylight illuminating our conscious mind, many of us have likewise reached the greatest extension of ideas associated with our Gemini house. The recent transit of Venus and the solar/lunar eclipses in this sign have intensified much seeding and fertilizing activity in our mind-streams. Now as the Sun pauses and changes directions, it is time to narrow the many possibilities and focus on those we want to nurture as the Sun now shines its light upon our Cancerian urges.

With my Gemini Moon in the 11th house, UAC was certainly the grand culminating flourish to this past year of travels and teachings. It was great good fortune to be part of this gathering of the astrological tribes from many nations and traditions, deepening friendships formed over the years and initiating new ones. One highlight of each UAC has been to participate in Michael Lutin’s musical productions.

May Day Greetings

Roman fresco of Flora Greetings to you on this May Day, which the ancient Romans celebrated in honor of Flora, the goddess of flowers.

During this season when the blaze of wildflowers covers the earth in dazzling arrays of color, Jupiter has been culminating over my Midheaven. I’ve had the great good fortune to travel to many places teaching astrology and will share some of the highlights from these visits.

But first, a few words about the upcoming Venus ‘transit’ or occultation which occurs on June 5 as Venus can been seen moving across the face of the Sun along its outer rim. This is a rare celestial event, which takes place only about once each century and comes in pairs that are 8 years apart. The astronomy is similar to that of an eclipse of the Moon.
{rokbox title=|Doppelmayer Illustration of Venus Transit| thumb=|images/newsletter/107sm.jpg|}images/newsletter/107.jpg{/rokbox}

The orbital plane of Venus is tilted at a slight angle to that of the ecliptic – the Sun’s apparent path as seen from earth. The two points at which these planes intersect are designated as the nodes of Venus – the point at which the path of Venus orbit crosses the ecliptic from south to north motion is the North Node at 16 Gemini and where it crosses as it travels from north to south is the South Node at 16 Sagittarius. The degrees of these heliocentric nodes remain almost constant over millennia. When there is a conjunction of Venus and Sun and it occurs on the degree of one of these nodes as it will on June 5 when the Sun, Venus, Venus North Node are all at 16 Gemini, we have an occultation or eclipse of the Sun by Venus as she is seen to pass over him.
